Dojo Etiqutte

  1. Bow as you enter or leave the dojo.
  2. Be on time for class. If you are late sit at the entrance of the dojo in seiza and wait to be invited into the class. If you arrive after warm-up exercises are over, go to the back of the class, do your own warm up.
  3. When you are satisfied you are thoroughly warmed up, go to the lower grade end of the class, kneel at the edge of the floor and wait to be invited to join the class by the instructor. Then perform a kneeling bow and join the class.
  4. When the class is scheduled to begin, line up quickly and quietly in order of rank When joining the class, the student should not pass in front of the instructor or the ranks, circle around the rear of the class and enter at a safe appropriate point.
  5. If you must leave early, let the instructor know before the class starts.
  6. Always make sure that your Gi is clean.
  7. Keep fingernails and toenails short. DO NOT! wear watches or jewellery.
  8. Students should turn away from instructor or opponent when adjusting Gi or belt.
  9. Show enthusiasm, spirit, respect for others, and good sportsmanship at all times.
  10. Always address the instructor using the term "Sensei"
  11. Students should stand in "Musubi Dachi"; i.e. heels together, hands by the sides, when receiving instructions or explanations, it is considered bad manners to squat, crouch, sit exposing the soles of ones feet, or stand with hands on the hips.
  12. Refrain from foul and abusive language in the Dojo.
  13. Notify the instructor if you have any medical conditions, which may limit your training.
  14. Enjoy your practice in the Art of Karate and remember, you will get out of karate what you put into it.
  15. Higher grades should aid lower belts in their training. They should be positive, encouraging and supportive, both among themselves and lower grades.
  16. No chewing gum or consumption of food in the Dojo.
  17. Never lose your temper during practice, train with intensity but without anger or hostility.
  18. Ladies must wear a T-Shirt beneath their Gi and long hair to be tied back in a ponytail.
  19. Mobile phones to be switched off during training.
  20. Discrimination of any type or bullying will not be tolerated
